Daijoubu presents Love and Deepspace Raffie’s Birthday Cupsleeve Event

Love and Deepspace, the latest 3D augmented otome mobile game by Chinese company Papergames, hit our shores on 18 January 2024. Being an avid otome gamer, I was absolutely bowled over by the expansive world, immersive fight scenes and larger than life love interests. It didn’t take long for the Daijoubu family to decide that we absolutely needed to celebrate our love for the game. So when a long timer from the anime scene told me to consider organising a cupsleeve event, I went, “What’s a cupsleeve event?”

Apparently it started out as a trend amongst K-pop fans who wanted to celebrate the birthdays of their favourite artistes. It is usually held in a consenting cafe which allows the organisers to decorate a portion of their premise with posters and plushies (or shrine) of the birthday boy/girl. In exchange, attendees have to minimally buy a drink from the cafe to enjoy the ambience and gather with others like them. The organisers will also design and produce an event cupsleeve at their own cost to accompany the drink which is given free to the attendees.

It sounded like an awesome idea though I was suspicious if anyone would really want to celebrate a fictional person’s birthday? But I didn’t care so I risked it by putting out an interest form and before I knew it, I had almost 100 interested parties who also wanted to celebrate Rafayel’s birthday (one of the four love interests in Love and Deepspace).

On March 9, barely 1.5 months from when the game was launched, Daijoubu presented to the world (I think?) the very first fanmade cupsleeve event for Love and Deepspace. In addition to a themed menu, we also engaged our customers with a live auction for artwork that mirrored Raffie’s art style, make your own cupcake activity, a lucky draw which saw some lucky customers going home with Raffie’s standee and lastly many many freebies, some generously donated by other fans.

Overall it was a huge success considering this was our first time organising a cupsleeve event and I think a large part of it was because this was really a fandom that was close to our hearts, and we went in with the view of just wanting to have fun.

Saying hi to our latest staff member
